Bentley Motor Car History
Today Bentley Motors Limited is still a British luxury automobile builder, however the company is owned by subsidiary in Germany, Volkswagen. Bentley Motors Limited was founded by Walter Owen Bentley in January 1919 in Cricklewood which is not far from London.
In the early days the powerful Bentley motor cars won the 34 hour Le Mans car race in the following years, 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930 and managed to win again in 2003.
Bentley currently produce the Continental Flying Spur, Continental GT and the Mulsanne.
Past vehicles that Bentley are noted for include the Bentley 4 1/2 Litre, Bentley Speed Six, Bentley R Type, Mark V1 Bentley, S2 Bentley, S3 Bentley, The Continental, The Bentley Turbo R and the Bentley Arnage. Silver Cloud Cars run in their wedding car fleet, the R Type, Mark V!, S2 and S3 Bentleys.
In the great Wall Street Crash in the early part of the century the Bentley business was very effected to the extent that interest dropped reducing demand for its expensive products. The courts appointed a receiver to Bentley Motors Limited.
Rolls-Royce moved in and took over all the assets of Bentley Motors Ltd and formed a new company called Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd.
The brand new Bentley 3 1/2 litre appeared in 1933, it was a sporting variant model of the Rolls Royce 20/25, which some traditional customers were not that happy with, but it was received very well by others. Walter Bentley was reported to say,
"Taking all things into consideration, I would rather own this Bentley than any other car produced under that name". Rolls-Royce's advertised the car as "the silent sports car", and this slogan was used by Rolls-Royce for Bentley cars until the 1950s.
In May 1938 a 60 acre site was acquired for Rolls-Royce by the British government near Crewe, Cheshire. During the 2nd world war more than 25,000 "Merlin" aircraft engines were produced at the Rolls Royce factory.
Meeting post-war demand, the UK Government put the pressure on to export and earn overseas currency, Rolls-Royce developed an all steel body, creating a "standard" ready-to-drive complete saloon car. The first of these was the Bentley MkV1, these started to emerge from the newly reconfigured factory in 1946. Some years later, the very popular Rolls Royce Silver Dawn was introduced, it was still a standard steel Bentley but with the Rolls-Royce grille added.
